Nebraska Cornhuskers Hire Matt Rhule as Head Coach
Former Carolina Panthers and Baylor Bears Coach to Lead Huskers
Former Carolina Panthers and Baylor Bears head coach Matt Rhule has been hired as the next head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team.
Rhule's Background
Rhule has a proven track record of success at both the collegiate and professional levels. As head coach of Baylor from 2017 to 2019, he led the Bears to two bowl victories and a 19-20 overall record. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as head coach of the Carolina Panthers, compiling a 11-27 record.
Nebraska's Need for a Change
The Cornhuskers have struggled in recent years, posting just one winning season since 2016. Former head coach Scott Frost was fired in September 2022 after a 1-2 start to the season.
High Expectations for Rhule
Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts expressed high expectations for Rhule, saying, "We believe that Matt is the right person to lead our football program back to national prominence." Rhule is known for his strong work ethic and his ability to develop players, both on and off the field.
Other Notable Coaching Moves
In addition to Rhule's hiring, the college football coaching carousel has seen other notable moves this offseason. Ed Foley, the long-time placekicker for the UTEP Miners, has decided to retire and will join the coaching staff as an assistant special teams coach.
